New Delhi, India – Renowned filmmaker Shekhar Kapur has been conferred the Padma Bhushan, India’s third-highest civilian award, for his invaluable contributions to the field of art. President Droupadi Murmu presented the award to Kapur in a grand ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhavan on Monday, attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and senior dignitaries.
A Moment of Gratitude
Expressing his heartfelt emotions, Kapur shared his appreciation for the recognition, saying, “Thank you very much, I am honoured…I hope I can pay the Government back in any way they want, for the good in society and the good in people and the good of the nation.”
A Daughter’s Pride
Kapur’s daughter, Kaveri, celebrated the honour through a touching tribute on Instagram Stories. Reflecting on her father’s philosophy, she wrote, “My father, when I asked for his advice, always said to me, ‘Your wealth lies not in the money you have earned, but in the respect you have earned.’ Today, as he is honoured with the #PadmaBhushan, I feel so blessed to have had a father who showed me the true path.”
Kaveri added that the recognition comes with a responsibility to continue working for the betterment of society and extended her gratitude to the Government of India for selecting her father for the prestigious award.

Shekhar Kapur’s illustrious career is marked by groundbreaking works that have left a lasting imprint on the film industry. His iconic films include:
- Bandit Queen (1994): A powerful biographical film based on the life of Phoolan Devi.
- Elizabeth (1998): A critically acclaimed British biographical drama that earned Kapur nominations for Best Director at the BAFTAs and Golden Globes.
- Elizabeth: The Golden Age (2007): The sequel to Elizabeth, which earned Cate Blanchett her first Oscar for Best Actress.
Additionally, Kapur directed The Four Feathers (2002), one of Heath Ledger’s last films, as well as beloved classics like Masoom and Mr. India, which continue to resonate with audiences to this day.
