Three Arrested Following Allegations of Extortion by Security Contractors at Auckland Supermarket

Three individuals – two men aged 23 and 39, and a 19-year-old woman – have been arrested following an investigation into allegations of misconduct by external security contractors at a Pak’nSave supermarket in Manukau, Auckland. The investigation, launched in late January, stemmed from complaints filed by five victims.

Detective Senior Sergeant Kevin Tiernan stated that the accused face multiple charges, including demands with intent and obtaining by deception, offenses carrying a maximum seven-year prison sentence. The charges relate to allegations that security contractors falsely accused customers of theft and demanded payments.

One complainant, speaking anonymously in February, described being falsely accused of stealing moisturizer and pressured into paying a $395 fine. After repeatedly requesting to view CCTV footage, the complainant was shown that she had, in fact, scanned the items.

This incident follows a previous controversy at the same Pak’nSave involving the leaked image of a politician allegedly shoplifting, obtained from the supermarket’s security system. Foodstuffs NZ confirmed that a security guard responsible for leaking the image was subsequently dismissed. The three accused are scheduled to appear in the Manukau District Court on Wednesday.
