A rāhui (traditional Māori restriction) has been placed on the Tongariro Alpine Crossing following the death of a man in his 50s on Saturday. The man collapsed while hiking the popular track around midday and, despite resuscitation attempts, passed away.

Under the guidance of Ngāti Hikairo ki Tongariro, a karakia (prayer) was performed with the man’s family and those who assisted. The rāhui, a sign of respect for the deceased and his whānau, will remain in place for three days, lifting at 6 am on Wednesday.

Hikers are advised to use alternative tracks during this time. The man’s death will be investigated by the Coroner.
