A US PhD student, Kyle Whorrall, has been identified as the victim of a fatal assault at an Auckland bus stop on Saturday night. Police are seeking the occupants of a black SUV believed to be involved in the attack.
The Attack and its Aftermath
Whorrall was attacked at a bus stop on St Johns Rd in Meadowbank. He was taken to hospital where he died from his injuries. Police have described the attack as “senseless” and are investigating the motive.
Witnesses Sought
Detective Inspector Glenn Baldwin said police are seeking witnesses who saw a white Toyota ute driving west along St Johns Rd and being cut off by a black SUV, which then U-turned in front of the ute. Police believe the black SUV was involved in the attack and are seeking to identify its occupants. The occupants of the white ute are considered critical witnesses.
Whorrall’s Final Moments
Baldwin said Whorrall, 33, went to the supermarket around 9:40 pm and walked 400 meters to the bus stop. He sat at the stop, which was not his usual one, and did not flag down a bus that was nearby. A few minutes later, he was attacked.
Police Investigation
Police have been contacted by a number of people but are still seeking witnesses in the vicinity of St Johns Rd before 10 pm. They believe the weapon used was “a long one” and that there may have been a third person in the black SUV at the time of the attack.
Community Reaction
Auckland’s Deputy Mayor Desley Simpson expressed her condolences to Whorrall’s family and the University of Auckland community, where Whorrall was a PhD student studying entomology.
Residents near the scene described the area as quiet and said they were shocked by the attack. A tribute on Facebook described Whorrall as a dedicated PhD student, expressing shock and sadness at his death.
University Statement
The University of Auckland, while expressing condolences, declined to comment on the case, stating that NZ police have requested that details not be discussed or shared while their investigation is underway.
Previous Entomological Fatality
The attack comes less than a year after another entomologist, Stephen Thorpe, was killed at the Blockhouse Bay Tennis Club in August. A 26-year-old man has been charged with Thorpe’s murder and is currently before the courts.
