Northland’s police force is getting a boost with nine new graduates joining the ranks, three of whom will be based in the Far North.
The 383 Don Mann Police recruit wing graduated from the Police College on Thursday, adding 76 new constables to the national force. They will begin their duties on Monday.
Of the nine officers headed to Northland, six will be stationed in Whangārei, two in Kaikohe, and one in Kaitāia. District Recruitment Lead Sergeant Joe Te Ao, based in Kaitāia, has played a significant role in recruitment efforts.
Te Ao expressed his pride in seeing so many of the recruits he personally encouraged graduate. He highlighted the strong pool of potential recruits in the region, mentioning three from his local gym and another three from his local coffee shop who he encouraged to apply.
One of the new officers headed to Kaikohe is Milanpreet Singh, who expressed his pride in serving the country that welcomed him with open arms after he migrated to New Zealand in 2019. He sees his role in the police force as a way to give back to the community.
Joining Singh in Kaikohe is Maximilian Stovell, a Kerikeri local who was inspired to join the police after positive feedback from friends and family. He enjoyed his “Scope” experience, which involved a few days riding along with local police, and is excited to return home and serve his community.
Te Ao emphasized the importance of building connections in the community and reaching out to potential recruits. He shared examples of individuals he encouraged to join the police, including a rugby referee and a plumber, both of whom are now graduating from the Police College.
Superintendent Matt Srhoj, District Commander Northland, expressed excitement about the new recruits joining the team, stating that they have worked hard to recruit these officers and are thrilled to fill some gaps in the force.
