UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has changed his stance on the definition of a woman, saying that trans women are not women, following a Supreme Court ruling last week.
Starmer previously stated that “trans women are women.” However, when asked to repeat this statement on ITV this week, he pointed to the Supreme Court judgment, which ruled that the term “woman” refers to biological sex. He said the judgment “answered that question.”
His official spokesman confirmed Starmer’s new stance, stating that “the Supreme Court judgment has made clear that when looking at the Equality Act, a woman is a biological woman. That is set out clearly by the court judgment.”
In the ITV interview, Starmer welcomed the judgment, saying it provides “real clarity in an area where we did need clarity.” He emphasized the importance of ensuring that all guidance is aligned with the court’s ruling.
Starmer’s change in stance comes after he previously signed a pledge stating that “trans women are women” during his campaign for the Labour leadership.
