What is SPICE-2000?

SPICE-2000 (Smart, Precise Impact, Cost-Effective) is an Israeli-developed guidance kit manufactured by Rafael Advanced Defense Systems. It transforms standard 2,000-pound (900 kg) “dumb” bombs-like the Mk. 84-into highly accurate, stand-off precision weapons. India has integrated SPICE-2000 with its Mirage-2000 and Su-30MKI fighter jets.

How Does It Work?

1. Modular Guidance Kit

• Front Section: Houses an advanced electro-optical (EO) seeker (camera) and guidance computer.
• Rear Section: Features deployable wings and tail fins for glide and control.

2. Mission Planning

• Before takeoff, mission planners load the kit’s memory cartridge with:
  • Target GPS coordinates
  • Satellite imagery of the target

  • Desired impact angle and fuse settings

3. Launch and Glide

• The fighter jet releases the SPICE-2000 from up to 60 km away-well outside the range of most enemy air defences.
• The bomb glides toward the target, using its wings and control surfaces to adjust its flight path.

4. Dual Guidance System

• GPS/INS: For long-range navigation, especially in poor weather or when the target is obscured.
• Electro-Optical Scene Matching: The EO seeker compares real-time images with pre-loaded reference images. If the target moves or is camouflaged, the bomb can correct its course mid-flight for pinpoint accuracy.

5. “Fire and Forget” and “Man-in-the-Loop”

• SPICE-2000 can operate autonomously after release (“fire and forget”).
• In complex scenarios, pilots or mission controllers can update targeting mid-flight (“man-in-the-loop”), increasing flexibility and precision.
