Jetstar Airways has announced it will start daily jet services between Hamilton Airport and Christchurch International Airport beginning 1 December 2025. This marks the first time Jetstar operates a domestic route out of Hamilton and introduces competition on the route, joining Air New Zealand’s recently resumed service.
Flight Details and Schedule
Jetstar will deploy Airbus A320 aircraft on the Hamilton-Christchurch route, providing a modern and comfortable jet service. The schedule features flights arriving in Hamilton from Christchurch at 9:25 am, with departures back to Christchurch at 10:00 am daily.
This will add 186 seats per direction daily, significantly increasing capacity between the two cities and boosting connectivity for the Waikato region.
Impact on Hamilton Airport and Regional Economy
Hamilton Airport’s acting Chief Executive Ben Langley welcomed the launch, highlighting it as a major development for regional connectivity and economic growth. With the addition of Jetstar’s service, combined with Air New Zealand flights starting 18 September 2025, Hamilton’s domestic jet flights will increase passenger numbers by approximately 60 percent.
“The competition benefits travellers, creates new jobs, offers more flight choices, and underpins regional development,” Langley said. Investments in upgraded terminal facilities and jet parking space have paved the way for this domestic jet expansion following the successful launch of Jetstar’s international flights earlier this year.
Competition with Air New Zealand
Air New Zealand announced earlier that it would recommence daily jet flights on the Hamilton-Christchurch route from 18 September 2025 using A320 aircraft, operating five days a week. Jetstar’s entry introduces daily frequency and an alternative option for travellers, a first for this route in 25 years.
Experts suggest that fares may become more competitive as both airlines vie for passengers, enhancing accessibility for business and leisure travellers across the South Island and the Waikato region.
Booking and Future Outlook
Jetstar is currently accepting bookings for the Hamilton to Christchurch flights starting in December, offering promotional fares and flexible fare options. Passengers can conveniently book via the Jetstar website or mobile app.
The successful launch of these routes reflects Hamilton Airport’s growing importance as a key regional hub in New Zealand aviation, connecting domestic centres and supporting trans-Tasman and international travel development.
Summary
From 1 December 2025, Jetstar will launch a daily Airbus A320 service between Hamilton and Christchurch, heightening domestic flight accessibility and fostering regional growth. The route introduces new competition to Air New Zealand’s services, promising travellers greater convenience, choice and competitive pricing. As the Waikato region’s airport expands its capacity and connections, Jetstar’s entry marks a significant milestone in New Zealand’s evolving domestic aviation landscape.
