Ekal Vidyalaya Movement Celebrates Milestone Achievements

Since its inception in 1988, the Ekal Vidyalaya movement, which began as a “one teacher” school aiming to bring education to children in remote Bharat villages, has grown exponentially. This initiative now encompasses healthcare, economic development, and digital literacy.

Key Figures of Achievement:

  • 79,872 schools established
  • 2.09 million children currently enrolled
  • Over 10 million children have received education
  • 855,000 individuals have access to healthcare
  • 17,400 women have been vocationally trained
  • 90,000 youth and women have gained skills training
  • 20,000 youth have been digitally trained

These impressive figures are a testament to the tireless efforts of countless volunteers. The Ekal movement has achieved this without any support from establishments, relying instead on donations from the Bharatiya diaspora overseas and contributions from corporate CSR initiatives.

The Ekal Vidyalaya Foundation of New Zealand, registered in 2007, has worked diligently with the Bharatiya diaspora in New Zealand to raise awareness and support for the Ekal movement. Over the past 17 years, Ekal NZ has sponsored over 500 schools, averaging 30 schools per year, while Ekal Australia supports about 800 to 900 schools annually.

Upcoming Event: Professor Manju Srivastava, one of the founders of the Ekal movement, will be visiting New Zealand. She has played a pivotal role in defining city-based chapters of Ekal in Bharat and abroad. Over the past 30+ years, she has traveled to more than 200 villages, including highly sensitive border areas. She has helped establish Ekal chapters in the USA, UK, Australia, and Nepal.

Prof. Srivastava will deliver talks on the Ekal movement in Auckland and Hamilton:
