Rotorua, 24 February 2025—The Hindu Women Forum (HWF), a division of the Hindu Council of New Zealand, has achieved another milestone by successfully completing its second Tongariro Alpine Crossing on 22 February 2025. This event underscores the forum’s unwavering commitment to women’s empowerment, well-being, and environmental stewardship.
A spirited group of 11 members from Auckland, Rotorua, and Wellington, along with their families, undertook the 20.2 km trek through New Zealand’s breathtaking and demanding alpine terrain. Each participant had unique motivations—some sought adventure, others aimed to push their limits, and many wished to experience the natural beauty of the iconic landscape. An inspiring participant, Tanishka Kaki, an 11-year-old from Rotorua, was the youngest member of the group, exemplifying the forum’s inclusive approach.
Though designed primarily as a women’s empowerment initiative, the event also welcomed family members who provided both moral and physical support, transforming the trek into a meaningful community experience.
The Tongariro Alpine Crossing, renowned for its volcanic scenery, emerald lakes, and rugged paths, embodies the values of strength, resilience, and personal growth—principles that resonate deeply with HWF’s mission. Adding a spiritual dimension to the experience, Varsha Kaki from Rotorua conducted a meditation session at the summit, a first for the event. Future crossings are expected to incorporate yoga sessions to enhance the overall experience.

Kanan Acharya, a representative of HWF, shared her thoughts on this year’s event: “This year’s trek was about encouraging more women to step out of their comfort zones, build confidence, and connect with nature. The Tongariro Alpine Crossing is not just a trek—it is a testament to inner strength, determination, and the power of collective support. We look forward to continuing this tradition and inspiring more women to take on challenges that foster personal and spiritual growth.”
The event’s success was due to the dedication of volunteers and organizers who share HWF’s vision of empowering women through transformative experiences. Ensuring safety was a top priority, with trained guides and comprehensive planning facilitating a smooth and enjoyable journey for all participants.
Participants shared their experiences, highlighting the transformative nature of the trek. Shradha Patel from Wellington described the journey as both a physical challenge and a spiritual quest, emphasizing the profound sense of inner fulfillment it brought her. Nagabrahmeswara KM, also from Wellington, praised the camaraderie and support of the group, which boosted his confidence throughout the trek. Varsha Kaki expressed pride in leading the meditation session and emphasized the importance of fostering new friendships and community support through such initiatives.
The Hindu Women Forum continues to promote the well-being and empowerment of women through various initiatives and events, fostering a supportive community where women can grow, learn, and thrive.
