In the infinite expanse of Sanātana Dharma, where the pursuit of tattva-jñāna (knowledge of reality) transcends the fleeting shadows of saṃsāra, the Brahmasutras emerge as a divine edifice, crafted by Śrī Vedavyāsa, the incarnation of Śrī Nārāyaṇa Himself. Within the Dvaita Vedānta sampradāya, as illuminated by the revered Āchārya Śrī Madhvāchārya, these 564 sūtras—recognized in this tradition due to specific textual divisions—are not mere intellectual constructs but sacrosanct revelations of the eternal truths governing existence. They proclaim the supremacy of Śrī Hari as Parabrahman, the Sarvottama (supreme among all), the reality of the jagat as His creation, and the irrevocable pañca-bheda (fivefold difference) that defines the relationship between jīva (individual soul), jagat (world), and Īśvara (the Supreme Lord).

This series, launched under the aegis of New Zealand Bharat News (NZB News), embarks on an ambitious odyssey to unravel the deep spiritual and hidden secrets of the Brahmasutras, guided by the authoritative bhāṣyas of Śrī Madhvāchārya, Śrī Jayatīrtha (Tikāchārya), and Śrī Rāghavendra Tīrtha. Each article offers a direct translation of the sūtras from their pristine Sanskrit, a profound exploration of their esoteric meanings, and a seamless integration with the Vedas, Upanishads, Itihāsas, and Purāṇas. The Dvaita perspective, rooted in the principle of bheda (difference), rejects the illusory unity of Advaita and the qualified unity of Viśiṣṭādvaita, asserting instead the eternal distinction and dependence of the jīva upon Śrī Hari. Having ignited the inquiry with “Athāto Brahma-jijñāsā,” identified Śrī Viṣṇu as the jagat’s cause in “Janmādy asya yataḥ,” established the śāstras as His revelation in “Śāstra-yonitvāt,” harmonized them in “Tat tu samanvayāt,” affirmed His sentient causation in “Īkṣater nāśabdam,” and clarified His primacy in “Gaunaś cen nātma-śabdāt,” we now turn to the seventh sūtra, “Yat tat śruteḥ”—a sacred affirmation that Śrī Hari’s causation is directly declared by śruti.

The seventh sūtra, “Yat tat śruteḥ” (Brahmasutra 1.1.7), translates as “Because that [is known] from śruti.” Its brevity underscores a definitive reliance on Vedic authority. In Sanskrit, the sūtra reads:
यत्तच्छ्रुतेः

यत् (Yat): Because.
तत् (Tat): That (Śrī Viṣṇu as Brahman).
श्रुतेः (Śruteḥ): From śruti (the Vedas).

Śrī Madhvāchārya interprets this sūtra as a direct affirmation that Śrī Viṣṇu, established as the sentient, primary cause of the jagat, is explicitly declared by śruti, countering any doubt raised by prior objections. Dvaita upholds śruti as the supreme pramāṇa, revealing Śrī Hari’s svatantratva and guṇas—jñāna, śakti, tejas—not as speculative inference but as divine truth. This sūtra, in its three words, binds the inquiry to śruti’s voice, urging the jīva to embrace Śrī Hari’s revealed glory.

Detailed Analysis: Dissecting the Sūtra

Yat: The Causal Link

“Yat,” meaning “because,” establishes a logical connection, grounding the prior sūtras’ claims in śruti’s authority. Śrī Madhvāchārya asserts that “yat” links “Janmādy asya yataḥ” and “Īkṣater nāśabdam” to Vedic testimony, ensuring Śrī Viṣṇu’s causation is not mere reasoning. The Taittirīya Upanishad’s “Yato vā imāni bhūtāni jāyante” (From whom all beings arise) exemplifies this. Śrī Jayatīrtha, in Nyāya-sudhā, elaborates that “yat” refutes reliance on anumāna (inference), as śruti alone reveals Śrī Hari’s nature. Śrī Rāghavendra Tīrtha sees “yat” as Śrī Hari’s grace, for śruti’s clarity—Śrī Kṛṣṇa’s upadeśa in the Gītā—dispels doubt.

This invites the sādhaka to trust śruti, chanting “Śruti-sāra” from the Dvādaśa-stotra, anchoring faith in revelation.

Tat: The Focus on Śrī Hari

“Tat,” meaning “that,” refers to Śrī Viṣṇu, the Brahman of prior sūtras—creator, sentient, and primary. Śrī Madhvāchārya cites the Śvetāśvatara Upanishad (6.8): “Na tasya kaścit patir asti loke” (No one is His lord in the world), affirming Śrī Hari as śruti’s subject. Śrī Jayatīrtha’s tarka reinforces “tat” as Śrī Viṣṇu’s svatantratva, distinct from devas or pradhāna, per “Tat tu samanvayāt.” Śrī Rāghavendra Tīrtha ties “tat” to Śrī Hari’s personal form, as Śrī Rāma’s valor in śruti-inspired itihāsa reveals His supremacy.

The jīva meditates on “tat,” chanting “Tat tvam asi” in Dvaita’s sense—servitude to Śrī Hari.

Śruteḥ: The Authority of Śruti

“Śruteḥ,” meaning “from śruti,” elevates the Vedas as the sole source of Brahma-jñāna. Śrī Madhvāchārya invokes the Ṛgveda (1.22.20): “Tad viṣṇoḥ paramam padam” (Viṣṇu’s supreme abode), a direct śruti declaration. Śrī Jayatīrtha argues that “śruteḥ” aligns with “Śāstra-yonitvāt,” for Śrī Hari’s revelation trumps human conjecture. Śrī Rāghavendra Tīrtha sees “śruteḥ” as Śrī Hari’s voice, as the Bhāgavata’s Śrī Prahlāda heard śruti in his heart, leading to bhakti.

The sādhaka engages śruti through pāṭha, reciting “Om Namo Nārāyaṇāya” as its essence.

Śāstric Connections: The Vedic Tapestry

The sūtra resonates across śruti and smṛti. The Chāndogya’s “Tad aikṣata” (He perceived) and the Gītā’s “Aham sarvasya prabhavaḥ” (I am the origin of all) are śruti-rooted, affirming Śrī Viṣṇu. The Viṣṇu Purāṇa’s “Vedaḥ śabda-mayam viṣṇoḥ” (The Veda is Viṣṇu’s sound) ties śruti to Him. The Ṛgveda’s “Viṣṇuḥ gopāḥ” (Viṣṇu is the protector) and the Rāmāyaṇa’s Śrī Rāma as śruti’s hero reflect His glory. The Bhāgavata’s Śrī Kṛṣṇa lifting Govardhana is śruti’s fruit, known through Vedic lineage.

The Dvaita paramparā’s śruti-pāṭha embodies “śruteḥ,” a living bridge to Śrī Hari.

Hidden Secrets: Cosmology and the Jīva’s Purpose

The sūtra unveils esoteric depths. Śrī Hari’s svatantratva, per Śrī Madhvāchārya’s viśeṣa, shines through śruti, His guṇas—jñāna, śakti—declared directly. Śrī Rāghavendra Tīrtha sees śruti as Śrī Hari’s eternal song, guiding jīvas across kalpas. The jagat’s satyatva is śruti’s truth, its order reflecting His will. The jīva’s purpose is to know Śrī Hari through śruti, attaining sāyujya, as Śrī Hanumān’s śruti-inspired leap served Śrī Rāma.

This secret deepens bhakti, for śruti’s voice is Śrī Hari’s call to the jīva.

Refutation of Pūrva-pakṣa

Śrī Madhvāchārya counters Advaita’s inference-based Brahman, citing “Yato vā imāni” as śruti’s directness. Sāṅkhya’s pradhāna falters, for śruti names Śrī Viṣṇu, not matter. Viśiṣṭādvaita’s mediated unity weakens before Dvaita’s śruti-rooted bheda. Śrī Jayatīrtha’s tarka refutes conjecture, while Śrī Rāghavendra Tīrtha’s bhakti affirms śruti’s revelation of Śrī Hari.
