California, boasting the fifth-largest economy globally, is taking on the Trump administration in a major legal battle. The state has filed a lawsuit challenging the legality of President Trump’s tariffs, arguing they are causing significant economic damage to California’s industries.
The lawsuit specifically targets tariffs imposed on steel and aluminum, as well as those levied on goods imported from China. These tariffs, California claims, are directly harming its agricultural sector, manufacturing industry, and tech giants, all major players in the state’s economic powerhouse.
“Californians are facing the fallout from the President’s decisions,” said Governor Gavin Newsom, a potential contender in the 2028 presidential election. “From farmers in the Central Valley to small businesses in Sacramento, families across the state are feeling the real consequences of this trade war.”
The lawsuit accuses Trump of exceeding his authority by bypassing established procedures and using the International Economic Emergency Powers Act to enact the tariffs. It argues that this approach is “unlawful and unprecedented,” leading to “immediate and irreparable harm” to California’s economy.
The White House, however, has dismissed the lawsuit, claiming California should focus on its own internal issues like crime and homelessness. “Instead of trying to block President Trump’s historic efforts to address our country’s trade deficits, Gavin Newsom should focus on California’s problems,” said White House spokesman Kush Desai.
