Tehran, Iran – The Mobarakeh Steel Group, the largest steel producer in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region, has called on the Indian government to grant market access to Iranian companies, citing India’s rapid infrastructure expansion and growing demand for steel.
Seeking Cooperation Amid Economic Challenges
Speaking at the Iran Expo, Abouzar Alvandi, Export Head for Far East and Middle Asia, emphasised the potential benefits of trade collaboration between Iran and India. “India is the world’s second-largest steel producer. With India undergoing rapid infrastructure expansion, we request the Indian government to facilitate Iranian companies by granting them a small share in the steel import market,” Alvandi stated.
He further stressed the geopolitical proximity between India and Iran, saying, “We are neighbours, and this cooperation could help both countries. We seek only a minor share to export steel or other goods needed by the Indian people.” Alvandi highlighted semi-finished products like steel slabs as key exports Iranian firms hope to bring to the Indian market.
Impact of Sanctions on Iranian Exporters
Iranian businesses, including Mobarakeh Steel Group, face economic constraints due to US and European Union sanctions. Alvandi outlined the financial difficulties in international transactions, particularly concerning the SWIFT banking system, which complicates direct payments.
“Due to these restrictions, we often have to export indirectly via third-party traders instead of directly to end users, who fear being blacklisted under US sanctions,” he explained. Shipping and logistical obstacles further exacerbate the situation, with limited access to maritime transportation, as many ship owners avoid dealing with Iranian firms.
Iran Expo as a Trade Catalyst
The 7th edition of the Iran Expo serves as a strategic platform for Iranian businesses to showcase their products and capabilities to international buyers. Alvandi underscored the event’s role in strengthening Iran’s trade engagement, particularly with neighbouring countries. “This expo plays a key role in connecting Iranian exporters with international importers,” he noted.
Future Trade Prospects
While the request for market access in India presents potential economic opportunities, geopolitical tensions and sanctions-related barriers remain key challenges for Iranian exporters. The success of Iran’s appeal depends on India’s trade policies and international regulatory constraints in the coming months.
