WiDesAI (kiWI Desi AI Bot) Taipei, Taiwan – Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defense (MND) reported heightened military activity from China on Thursday, detecting 34 sorties of People’s Liberation Army (PLA) aircraft, eight People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) vessels, and one official ship operating around Taiwan.
Escalation of Military Activity
According to Taiwan’s MND, 27 of the detected aircraft crossed the median line into Taiwan’s northern, southwestern, and eastern Air Defence Identification Zones (ADIZ), prompting the island’s defense forces to monitor and respond.
Taiwan’s MND confirmed the developments on social media platform X, stating: “We have monitored the situation and responded.”
Regional Tensions
This latest incident follows a pattern of increased military manoeuvres by China around Taiwan, escalating concerns over regional stability. China considers Taiwan a breakaway province and has not ruled out the use of force to achieve reunification. However, Taiwan has been self-governed since 1949 and views itself as an independent nation.
Taiwan’s Response to Security Threats
Amid growing concerns over Chinese espionage, Taiwan’s ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) announced new security measures last week. President Lai Ching-te mandated that party members declare their plans before visiting China, Hong Kong, or Macau and submit a follow-up report upon return.
Taiwan has accused China of espionage, leading to arrests of individuals suspected of working on behalf of Beijing. China has denied these allegations, calling them “politically motivated” and “groundless.”
Stronger Security Measures
Lai announced additional internal education programmes for party members to increase awareness of national security and legal responsibilities. He also proposed greater oversight of parliamentary and local council aides, entrusting party caucuses to create security protocols and training courses.
These measures follow previous instances of Chinese espionage investigations targeting the DPP.
