Auckland commuters faced significant disruption this morning after a fatal crash on the south-western motorway resulted in the death of a driver and widespread traffic chaos across the city.
The single-vehicle crash occurred just before 5am on the northbound lanes of State Highway 20 near Onehunga. Emergency services responded quickly, but sadly, the sole occupant of the vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene. Police closed all northbound lanes between Neilson Street and Hillsborough Road for several hours while the Serious Crash Unit conducted a thorough investigation. The motorway has since reopened, but motorists were advised to expect lingering delays as congestion slowly cleared.
In addition to the fatal incident, a separate two-truck collision on the northern motorway near the Auckland Harbour Bridge also caused heavy congestion for southbound traffic. Although all lanes have now reopened, the morning commute was severely impacted, with traffic backed up for kilometres and some journeys taking up to two hours.
Authorities are continuing their investigation into the cause of the fatal crash, with a report to be prepared for the Coroner. Police have thanked the public for their patience and cooperation during the emergency response and cleanup.
