New Delhi, India – Air Marshal Ashutosh Dixit was honoured with a ceremonial Tri-Service Guard of Honour at South Block lawns in Delhi on Thursday as he formally assumed the position of Chief of Integrated Defence Staff (CISC). This prestigious appointment follows the superannuation of Lt General JP Mathew, who served in the role since April 2023.
Leadership Transition at Integrated Defence Staff
Lt Gen Mathew concludes over four decades of distinguished military service, including a two-year tenure at the helm of the Headquarters of Integrated Defence Staff (IDS). His leadership played a crucial role in joint military operations and strategic defence planning.
Air Marshal Dixit, who previously headed the Prayagraj-based Central Air Command, now steps into the leadership role, bringing extensive operational experience from his career in the Indian Air Force.
A Veteran Aviator and Defence Strategist
Commissioned into the fighter stream of the IAF on 6 December 1986, Air Marshal Dixit is a Qualified Flying Instructor and Experimental Test Pilot, boasting over 3,300 hours of flying experience across multiple aircraft types.
An alumnus of the National Defence Academy, Defence Services Staff College (Bangladesh), and National Defence College, Dixit has actively contributed to India’s strategic defence operations. His involvement in Op Safed Sagar during the Kargil War and Op-Bakshak highlights his operational expertise.
Contributions to India’s Defence Modernisation
As a Commanding Officer, Dixit led the re-equipment of an IAF squadron with Mirage-2000 fighter aircraft and commanded both a front-line fighter airbase in the Western Sector and a premier fighter training base in the Southern Sector.
His leadership extended to critical roles:
- Air Defence Commander of Southern Air Command
- Assistant Chief of Air Staff (Projects)
- Assistant Chief of Air Staff (Plans) at Air Headquarters
Driving Indigenous Defence Projects
During his tenure as Deputy Chief of Air Staff, Dixit played a pivotal role in accelerating indigenous aircraft projects under India’s Aatmanirbharta (self-reliance) initiative, including:
- LCA Mark-1A
- LCA Mark-2
- Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA)
His advocacy for future technologies and defence modernisation ensures that the IAF remains at the forefront of self-reliant defence capabilities.
