Apple has launched a new app, “Surveyor,” designed to enhance the accuracy of Apple Maps by collecting real-world mapping data. Unlike typical consumer apps, Surveyor is intended for use by Apple’s mapping partners.
The app works in conjunction with the third-party platform Premise. Partners use Premise to receive mapping tasks, which involve driving a designated route while capturing images of street signs, traffic signals, and other roadside details using an iPhone mounted in landscape mode. This data is then transmitted to Apple to improve the precision of objects placed on the map.
This crowdsourced data collection strategy allows Apple to maintain up-to-date and accurate map information, particularly for smaller, crucial details. While not officially announced as a partner, the integration with Premise suggests a collaboration to ensure continuous Apple Maps updates. This approach mirrors similar strategies used by competitors like Google Maps and Waze.
Apple’s use of Surveyor indicates a potential shift towards AI-driven, real-time map enhancements, promising users more accurate and detailed navigation in the future.
