Indian Air Defence Intercepts Pakistani Drones Amid Regional Blackouts

New Delhi, India – Escalating tensions between India and Pakistan, the Indian Armed Forces intercepted multiple Pakistani drones on 8 May, as blackouts were enforced across Akhnoor, Pathankot, Rajouri, Nagrota, and other locations.

Heavy Artillery Fire and Drone Incursions

  • Explosions were reported in Samba, with heavy artillery fire heard in various regions.
  • Red streaks lit up the skies as Pakistan’s drones were intercepted in Rajouri and Nagrota.
  • Blackouts were enforced in key locations, including Jammu and Kashmir (Akhnoor, Udhampur), Haryana (Ambala, Panchkula), Punjab (Firozpur), and Rajasthan (Jaisalmer).

Jammu and Kashmir CM Urges Caution

J&K Chief Minister Omar Abdullah appealed to residents to stay indoors, avoid rumors, and follow official updates. “Intermittent sounds of blasts, probably heavy artillery, can now be heard… Please stay off the streets and remain safe,” he posted on X (formerly Twitter).

Pakistan’s Airspace Violations

Wing Commander Vyomika Singh revealed that on 8 May, Pakistan violated Indian airspace with 300–400 drones deployed across 36 locations—from Leh to Sir Creek—to target Indian military infrastructure.

The Pakistani Army also used heavy-caliber weapons along the LoC, leading to Indian defensive action.

Forensic Examination of Drone Debris

  • Preliminary reports suggest the drones used were Turkish Asisguard Songar models.
  • An armed UAV attempted to strike Bathinda military station but was neutralized by Indian forces.

India’s Counter-Strike Measures

In retaliation, India:

  • Launched armed drones at four Pakistani air defense sites.
  • Destroyed an air defense radar in Pakistan.
  • Shot down over 50 Pakistani drones along the LoC and International Border (IB).

Pakistan’s Use of Civilian Airliners Raises Concerns

India criticized Pakistan’s decision not to close its civil airspace, despite its own failed drone and missile attacks.

“Pakistan is using civil airliners as a shield, knowing an Indian air defense response would be swift. This is unsafe for unsuspecting commercial flights,” Wing Commander Vyomika Singh warned.

Indian Air Force Shows Restraint

Despite heightened threats, the Indian Air Force ensured the safety of international flights, avoiding escalation while intercepting hostile targets.

Looking Ahead

With tensions remaining high, global observers continue to monitor developments, as India and Pakistan navigate a volatile security landscape.
