Rajasthan Royals delivered a stunning eight-wicket victory over Gujarat Titans in Match 47 of the Indian Premier League 2025 at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur on 28 April 2025. Chasing 210, RR reached the target in 15.5 overs, powered by 14-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi’s 101 off 38 balls and Yashasvi Jaiswal’s 70 not out. For New Zealand fans, Glenn Phillips’ 10 for GT was a fleeting Kiwi highlight in a match dominated by RR’s young star.
Background Information
The IPL 2025 season has been tough for Rajasthan Royals, led by Riyan Parag, with only two wins from nine matches, languishing in ninth after five straight losses, including a 58-run defeat to GT on 9 April in Ahmedabad. Gujarat Titans, under Shubman Gill, sat fifth with four wins from nine, buoyed by a 48-run win over Lucknow Super Giants on 13 April. The Jaipur pitch, with an average first-innings score of 185, favours batters, though spinners like RR’s Wanindu Hasaranga can exploit turn. New Zealand’s Phillips has been GT’s utility player, while RR’s lack of Kiwi representation shifted focus to their young talents. GT’s 6-1 head-to-head dominance, including their earlier 58-run win, made RR underdogs, but a win was critical for their playoff hopes.

Highlights
GT’s innings began strongly, with Gill and Sai Sudharsan adding 80 in the powerplay. Theekshana dismissed Sudharsan for 22 in the fifth over, but Gill’s 84, including eight fours and three sixes, and Buttler’s 50 not out, with four boundaries, powered GT. Glenn Phillips’ quick 10 and Rahul Tewatia’s 14 not out lifted GT to 209, despite Archer’s removal of Shahrukh Khan for 12. RR’s chase was explosive, with Suryavanshi and Jaiswal smashing 166 for the first wicket in 12 overs. Suryavanshi’s 101, with 11 sixes and seven fours, included a 35-ball ton, the second-fastest in IPL history. Jaiswal’s 70 not out, with six fours and two sixes, kept pace, surviving a dropped catch by Mohammed Siraj. Prasidh Krishna’s 0 for 45 and Karim Janat’s 30-run first over were hammered, with Parag’s 32 not out, including a match-winning six off Washington Sundar, finishing the chase. Suryavanshi earned Player of the Match for his historic knock.
Records
Vaibhav Suryavanshi’s Feats: At 14, Suryavanshi became the youngest T20 centurion ever, scoring a 38-ball 101 with 11 sixes, breaking Sanju Samson’s RR record of 10 in an innings. RR’s Chase Record: RR’s 210 in 15.5 overs was the fastest 200-plus chase in IPL history, surpassing RCB’s 16 overs against GT in 2024. Partnership Milestone: Suryavanshi and Jaiswal’s 166-run stand was RR’s highest for any wicket in IPL, beating the 155 by Jos Buttler and Devdutt Padikkal in 2022.
Historical Data
RR’s win narrowed GT’s head-to-head lead to 6-2 in eight IPL meetings, marking RR’s first victory over GT since 2022. At Jaipur, RR now lead 2-1 in three clashes. GT’s 2022 title and 2023 runner-up finish contrast with RR’s 2008 triumph and 2022 final appearance. New Zealand players have featured, with Phillips’ 92 runs for GT this season, while RR rely on local talents like Suryavanshi. The IPL’s global appeal saw nine Kiwis prioritise the tournament over a T20I series against Pakistan in March 2025. GT’s earlier 58-run win over RR on 9 April, driven by Sai Sudharsan’s 82, highlighted their prior dominance.
Discussion
RR’s record-breaking chase was a masterclass in fearless batting. Suryavanshi’s 101, at just 14, dismantled GT’s bowling, with Janat’s 30-run over setting the tone. Jaiswal’s 70 not out and Parag’s finishing ensured RR’s intent never wavered. GT’s 209, bolstered by Gill’s 84 and Buttler’s 50, was formidable, but Theekshana’s 2 for 35 and Archer’s pace couldn’t stem RR’s onslaught. For New Zealand fans, Phillips’ 10 was a minor note, but GT’s bowling, especially Siraj’s 0 for 42, faltered under pressure. The Jaipur pitch, flat and true, suited RR’s aggressive approach, with Parag’s toss decision to bowl first proving strategic despite GT’s high total. RR’s third win lifts them to eighth, keeping playoff hopes alive, while GT’s fourth loss drops them to sixth, denting their net run rate and playoff prospects.
