Study Reveals Heightened Risk of Second Cancers Among Breast Cancer Survivors

A recent study conducted in England sheds light on the increased risk of second cancers among breast cancer survivors, particularly in individuals living in areas with higher socioeconomic disadvantage. The research, led by a team from the University of Cambridge, analyzed data from nearly 600,000 patients, offering valuable insights into this concerning phenomenon.

Breast cancer remains the most frequently diagnosed cancer in the UK, affecting predominantly women. Despite advancements in diagnosis and treatment, survivors face a heightened risk of developing secondary cancers, including endometrial and ovarian cancer for women and prostate cancer for men.

Previous research hinted at the elevated risk, suggesting that breast cancer survivors are 24% to 27% more likely to develop non-breast primary cancers than the general population. However, precise estimates were lacking until now.

The study, published in Lancet Regional Health – Europe, examined data from over 580,000 female and 3,500 male breast cancer survivors diagnosed between 1995 and 2019. The findings revealed significantly increased risks of secondary cancers, notably in the contralateral breast, endometrium, and prostate.

Age of diagnosis played a crucial role, with younger survivors facing a substantially higher risk compared to their older counterparts. Additionally, individuals from socioeconomically deprived backgrounds were found to be at a 35% greater risk of developing secondary cancers, primarily driven by lifestyle factors like smoking and obesity.

While the study underscores the urgent need to address health inequalities, further research is warranted to understand the underlying factors driving these disparities. By gaining deeper insights, healthcare professionals can better tailor interventions to mitigate the risk of second cancers among breast cancer survivors, ultimately improving outcomes and reducing disparities in cancer care.
