Haryana’s Suruchi Singh has pulled off a stunning upset, defeating Olympian Manu Bhaker to win gold in the women’s 10m air pistol event at the ISSF World Cup in Lima, Peru. This victory marks a significant milestone for Suruchi, showcasing her talent and potential on the world stage.
Manu Bhaker, a consistent performer for India, had to settle for silver as Suruchi’s accuracy and composure proved to be the winning combination on the day.
Back home in Haryana, celebrations erupted as news of Suruchi’s triumph spread. Her father, Inder Singh, expressed his joy and pride, saying, “We are over the moon. We hope Suruchi wins gold everywhere she goes. We hope that the government builds a shooting range since there are so many talented shooters in Haryana, more than anywhere else in the country. It would give these shooters a chance to reach their full potential.”
A Second Gold in a Week:
This victory marks Suruchi’s second consecutive gold medal this year. Just last week, the 18-year-old won her first senior World Cup gold in Buenos Aires, shooting a remarkable 244.6.
Manu Bhaker’s Silver:
Meanwhile, Manu Bhaker’s silver medal in Lima marks her return to the podium since winning a double bronze at the Paris 2024 Olympics. She had missed out on a medal in Buenos Aires earlier this month.
A Strong Showing for India:
In the men’s 10m air pistol event, Saurabh Chaudhary ended his three-year medal drought in individual events, winning bronze with a score of 219.1. China’s Hu Kai took gold, while Brazil’s Felipe Almeida Wu claimed silver.
Varun Tomar narrowly missed out on a medal, finishing fourth in the men’s final.
This strong showing from Indian shooters at the ISSF World Cup in Lima demonstrates the depth of talent in Indian shooting, with a new generation of shooters stepping up to challenge the established stars.
