The Hindu Heritage Centre in Rotorua has taken a significant step towards environmental stewardship and community wellbeing with the launch of its new Community Garden and Sustainability Initiative. Made possible through a generous $12,000 grant from the Rotorua Lakes Council’s Community Matching Fund, this initiative is already sowing seeds of change—both literally and figuratively.
Officially opened on 22 January 2025 by Her Excellency Ms. Neeta Bhushan, High Commissioner of India to New Zealand, and Her Worship Tania Tapsell, Mayor of Rotorua, the project is quickly becoming a shining example of grassroots community development.
At the heart of the initiative are six wheelchair-accessible raised garden beds, expertly constructed by Duane Changalee. These garden beds are now flourishing with fresh vegetables, herbs, and fruit—nurtured by local volunteers and providing not only food but also inspiration.
“This is about more than just gardening,” says Dr Guna Magesan, President of the Hindu Council of New Zealand and retired senior soil and environmental scientist. “It’s about empowering people to connect with nature, care for the environment, and grow stronger communities.”

To extend the benefits of this project, the Hindu Heritage Centre is hosting free Gardening and Sustainable Harvesting Workshops, open to people of all ages and experience levels. The workshops will focus on eco-friendly, chemical-free gardening methods and sustainable harvesting techniques, and will also highlight the cultural and ecological value of traditional planting practices.
