Police have launched a homicide investigation following the death of a 30-year-old woman in Hamilton after she was struck by a vehicle on Thursday morning. The incident occurred at the intersection of Ōhaupō Road and Kahikatea Drive in the suburb of Melville.
According to police, the woman was standing next to a power pole at the corner when a vehicle drove into the pole, fatally injuring her. Initial reports suggested two vehicles might have been involved, but police have since confirmed only one vehicle was at the scene.
Emergency services were notified just before 10am. St John Ambulance staff assessed the woman at the scene and transported her to Waikato Hospital in critical condition, but she later died from her injuries.
Detective Inspector Matt Cranshaw, Waikato Field Crime Manager, stated that investigators and forensic specialists remain at the scene, working to establish the full circumstances of the incident. The intersection has been closed to traffic, with diversions in place, and police expect the area to remain cordoned off for some time while inquiries continue.
Police have extended their condolences to the whānau and friends of the deceased and are appealing to the public for any information that could assist the investigation.
