Cairo, Egypt – India and Egypt have agreed to intensify joint efforts in combating terrorism in all its forms and manifestations, following the 4th Meeting of the Joint Working Group on Counter Terrorism held in Cairo on Wednesday.
Strong Condemnation of the Pahalgam Terror Attack
Both nations strongly condemned the recent terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, which targeted domestic and international tourists. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) stated that Egypt reaffirmed its full support for India in confronting terrorism and violence aimed at undermining national security and stability.
High-Level Delegation Discussions
The meeting was attended by Ambassador KD Dewal, Joint Secretary for Counter Terrorism at India’s MEA, and Ambassador Walid Al-Fiqi, Director of the Department of Counter Terrorism at Egypt’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Representatives from various agencies of both nations also participated.
Addressing Emerging Threats
India and Egypt discussed new and evolving challenges in the fight against terrorism, including:
- Use of technology for terrorist activities
- Terror financing via cryptocurrencies
- Unmanned aerial systems in terrorist operations
- Cyber misuse for propaganda and recruitment
Enhanced Bilateral Cooperation
The countries agreed to strengthen joint efforts in anti-money laundering, drug trafficking, and organised crime prevention. Additionally, they will deepen collaboration in:
- Training and capacity building
- Cyber security
- Artificial Intelligence (AI) applications for counter-terrorism
- Exchange of best practices and intelligence sharing
Expanding Multilateral Cooperation
India and Egypt also discussed coordinating counter-terrorism efforts in multilateral forums, including:
- United Nations (UN)
- BRICS
- Global Counter Terrorism Forum (GCTF)
- Financial Action Task Force (FATF)
Both nations reiterated their commitment to finalising and adopting the UN Comprehensive Convention on International Terrorism (CCIT) to streamline global counter-terrorism efforts.
Future Meetings and Cooperation
The next Joint Working Group meeting will be held in India at a mutually convenient date, continuing efforts to strengthen security collaborations between the two nations.
With growing security concerns globally, the India-Egypt counter-terrorism partnership signals a shared commitment to maintaining regional and international stability.
