New Delhi, India – Several Pakistani actors, including Mahira Khan, Hania Aamir, and Ali Zafar, have had their Instagram accounts blocked in India, with a message stating that the restriction follows a legal request for compliance.
Broader Actions Against Digital Content
This development follows India’s ban on 16 Pakistani YouTube channels earlier this week. The channels were accused of spreading provocative content, misinformation, and communal narratives against India, its Army, and security agencies, particularly in the wake of the 22 April Pahalgam terror attack, which claimed 26 lives.
The ban was implemented based on recommendations from the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA). A government source confirmed: “On the recommendations of the Ministry of Home Affairs, the Government of India has banned some Pakistani YouTube channels for disseminating provocative and communally sensitive content, false and misleading narratives, and misinformation.”
Impact on Pakistani Artists in India
Since 2016, no Pakistani actors have been part of India’s film industry, following the terror attack on an Indian Army base in Uri. The restrictions extend beyond digital platforms, as Pakistani actor Fawad Khan’s film Abir Gulaal was not released in India earlier this month. Sources within the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting indicated that the film, which stars Vaani Kapoor, will not be screened in India.
Security Concerns Following the Pahalgam Attack
The Pahalgam terror attack on 22 April, which targeted tourists in Jammu and Kashmir, has prompted India to take strong measures against Pakistan, citing concerns over cross-border terrorism. The bans on social media and streaming platforms highlight India’s tightened stance on digital content from Pakistan.
Tensions and Future Developments
With both digital and entertainment restrictions continuing to emerge, the evolving situation reflects escalating security and diplomatic measures between the two nations. Whether these steps will extend further remains to be seen as India reinforces its response to the Pahalgam attack.
