North Korea Confirms Sending Troops to Fight Alongside Russia in Ukraine Conflict

Seoul, South Korea – For the first time, North Korea has officially acknowledged that its troops participated in Russia’s military operations against Ukraine, describing their involvement as a “sacred mission” aimed at strengthening bilateral ties with Moscow. The revelation was made through North Korea’s state-run news agency KCNA on Monday, citing orders from leader Kim Jong Un.

Details of North Korea’s Role

According to KCNA and South Korea’s Yonhap News Agency, North Korean soldiers were reportedly instrumental in assisting Russian forces to “completely liberate” the Kursk border region—a claim contested by Ukraine, which denies losing control over the area. Russian Chief of Staff Valery Gerasimov recently praised the contribution of North Korean troops during a video conference with Russian President Vladimir Putin on 26 April.

Kim Jong Un’s decision to deploy North Korean forces was described by the North’s Central Military Commission as an initiative to bolster “traditional friendship and solidarity” between Pyongyang and Moscow. The commission stated that the mission was also aimed at ensuring “development and prosperity” for both nations and protecting North Korea’s honour.

Mutual Treaty and Recognition

North Korea’s participation is rooted in the Treaty on Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, signed between Kim and Putin in June 2024 in Pyongyang. The treaty obliges both nations to provide military assistance to one another in times of war.

Kim has lauded the North Korean troops involved in the operation as heroes and announced plans to erect a monument in Pyongyang to honour their contributions. The fallen soldiers will be memorialised with flowers symbolising immortality placed at their tombstones.

International Criticism

The United States State Department issued a statement condemning North Korea’s involvement, stating that it, along with other “third countries,” has “perpetuated” the war in Ukraine. The department also called for an end to Moscow’s support for Pyongyang, as reported by Al Jazeera.

Geopolitical Implications

Russia’s acknowledgement of North Korean troops comes amidst heightened scrutiny, with accusations from the US, South Korea, the UK, and Ukraine last year that North Korean soldiers had been observed on the frontlines of the conflict. This development further intensifies the complex dynamics surrounding the ongoing war and raises questions about Pyongyang’s evolving role in global geopolitics.

As these revelations emerge, the involvement of North Korea adds another layer of international concern to an already volatile situation. The implications of such alliances will undoubtedly influence diplomatic and military strategies in the coming months.
