Bengaluru, India – Rising hockey talent Sunil Jojo is making strides toward his national breakthrough, training at the Senior Men’s National Coaching Camp in Bengaluru. The 22-year-old defender, hailing from Rourkela, Odisha, has already represented India twice at the Junior Hockey World Cup and played a key role in the bronze-medal finish at the recent Sultan of Johor Cup.
Transition to Senior-Level Hockey
Reflecting on his new challenge, Sunil acknowledges the physicality and fast pace of senior-level hockey. “It takes some getting used to. It’s not easy. The physicality is much more, and the pace of the game is also very quick, so you need to adjust. The skill level is different, so you need to train very hard,” Sunil told Hockey India (HI).
Strengths and Areas for Growth
Sunil considers game awareness and tackling his key strengths but remains focused on improving endurance and stamina. “I know I need to work hard on my stamina and endurance to become the best player I can be,” he added.
Training Alongside Hockey Icon Manpreet Singh
Having long admired Indian hockey maestro Manpreet Singh, Sunil is relishing the chance to train alongside his role model. “I’m with him a lot now, and I can learn a lot from him. He plays in multiple positions, so I try to learn how he adapts to different situations,” Sunil said.
Hero Hockey India League and Future Aspirations
Sunil was picked by UP Rudras in the recently revived Hero Hockey India League, where, despite limited playing time, he gained valuable exposure. “It was a great opportunity. While I didn’t get to play many matches, I learned a lot in the dressing room and training ground,” he noted.
Looking ahead, Sunil has set his ultimate goal: “I want to be a regular part of the Indian team and take part in all competitions. My dream is to win medals for the country.”
Beyond Hockey: Giving Back to His Family
A product of Odisha’s rich hockey culture, Sunil’s dedication extends beyond the sport. He has secured employment with Southeastern Railways, allowing him to support his family. “It means a lot to me to ease their burden. Growing up, they supported me a lot, so it’s nice to do what I can for them,” he shared.
Mental Focus: The Key to Success
For Sunil, mental resilience is just as crucial as physical ability. “The most important thing that the best players in the world have is mental focus. If you have that, then all your goals are achievable,” he emphasized.
Looking Ahead
With determination, talent, and ambition, Sunil Jojo is on a promising path toward national glory, representing India on the global hockey stage.
